What Is Net Metering?
Net metering, or Net Energy Metering (NEM), is a billing arrangement that allows solar system owners to send excess electricity generated during the day back to the grid. In return, they receive credits that offset the electricity they consume from the grid when their solar system isn’t producing enough power. This means that during sunny periods, your solar panels may produce more electricity than you use. That surplus is exported to the grid, and your utility meter effectively runs backward, earning you credits. Later, when your panels aren’t producing—like at night or on cloudy days—you can draw electricity from the grid using those credits, reducing or even eliminating your utility bill.
